The Wilson Center hosts a discussion Wednesday on China?s military power and its impact on the region.
Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter provided the keynote address.?Under the Obama Administration, the Pentagon has taken a strategic interest in the Asia-Pacific area.?
The first panel focused on China?s current and future military capabilities and a second panel considered the responses of the United States and other regional actors to China?s growing military power.
Participants in the Morning panel included representatives from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace,?the American Enterprise Institute,?the U.S. Naval War College,?the National Bureau of Asian Research,?Defense Group Inc. and?the Project 2049 Institute.
In the afternoon, Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was joined by former Ambassador to China J. Stapleton Roy, as well as?Cheng Li,?director of research at the Brookings Institution's China Center, and?David M. Lampton,?director of China studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, in a discussion about U.S.-China relations after China's transition to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
