BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) -A Romanian referee was punched and beaten by an angry player after showing a red card in a fifth-division football match.

Olteniteanu.ro says the incident occurred Sunday in a match between CSM Oltenita and Viitorul Soldanu after referee Ionel Duta sent a player off with a second yellow card.

Viitorul Soldanu players protested and then chased Duta before an unnamed player punched and hit him. Duta broke free and did not need medical treatment.

Duta ended the match in the 50th minute when CSM Oltenita was leading 5-1.

The disciplinary committee of the Calarasi Football Association is expected to rule on the incident.
