Bees 'self-medicate' when infected with some pathogens

Friday, March 30, 2012

Research from North Carolina State University shows that honey bees "self-medicate" when their colony is infected with a harmful fungus, bringing in increased amounts of antifungal plant resins to ward off the pathogen.

"The colony is willing to expend the energy and effort of its worker bees to collect these resins," says Dr. Michael Simone-Finstrom, a postdoctoral research scholar in NC State's Department of Entomology and lead author of a paper describing the research. "So, clearly this behavior has evolved because the benefit to the colony exceeds the cost."

Wild honey bees normally line their hives with propolis, a mixture of plant resins and wax that has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Domesticated honey bees also use propolis, to fill in cracks in their hives. However, researchers found that, when faced with a fungal threat, bees bring in significantly more propolis ? 45 percent more, on average. The bees also physically removed infected larvae that had been parasitized by the fungus and were being used to create fungal spores.

Researchers know propolis is an effective antifungal agent because they lined some hives with a propolis extract and found that the extract significantly reduced the rate of infection.

And apparently bees can sometimes distinguish harmful fungi from harmless ones, since colonies did not bring in increased amounts of propolis when infected with harmless fungal species. Instead, the colonies relied on physically removing the spores.

However, the self-medicating behavior does have limits. Honey bee colonies infected with pathogenic bacteria did not bring in significantly more propolis ? despite the fact that the propolis also has antibacterial properties. "There was a slight increase, but it was not statistically significant," Simone-Finstrom says. "That is something we plan to follow up on."

There may be a lesson here for domestic beekeepers. "Historically, U.S. beekeepers preferred colonies that used less of this resin, because it is sticky and can be difficult to work with," Simone-Finstrom says. "Now we know that this is a characteristic worth promoting, because it seems to offer the bees some natural defense."

###

The paper, "Increased resin collection after parasite challenge: a case of self-medication in honey bees?," was co-authored by Dr. Marla Spivak of the University of Minnesota and is available online from PLoS ONE. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Canvas printing and canvas prints from your own photos

I?m asked sometimes how to go about getting the best out of my photos and what would be a good idea and a great way to show off your photos would be to have some canvas prints made from them, really it does make a large difference to your home and the presence you get from them to.

If you do decide to have some?canvas printing done then why not opt for the triptych sort of canvas printing, this is basically when you have 1 photo that you have had cut into 3 or 4 or as many canvas prints you like and spread over them to create one whole image when place on your wall. Having a canvas print is an awesome way to present your photos but having a lot of them in an arty fashion just makes them look out of this world.

You can purchase canvas prints online or through high street shops? a lot of time it?s good to see them before you buy them because you will be able to grasp what they look like in terms of the colors and the size of the canvas print to then you can try to imagine it already hung up on your wall.

Of course it much easier through to order your canvas prints online, it?s also tends to be a lot cheaper as well, have you ever noticed that the canvas prints you would find in shops they tend to be on a piece of wood for the backing or a bit of cardboard which I would say is ok but if you want to go for quality then your better to order from an online shop that sells there canvas prints with professional stretcher bar frames, and only that but with the stretcher bars frames they stay a lot more tight for a much longer time to.

Another good thing about canvas printing is that you can have your artwork printed on canvas to, so if you?re an artists and you have some work that you want to show off at an exhibition or you just want to give some of your artwork away as a gift but don?t want to give away the originals then you can simply have some artwork printed on canvas for a very good price and the similarity from the original to the canvas print is very amazing as they look exactly the same and you would even be able to tell the difference from a small distance from the wall, the only real way of telling would be to run your finger across it and you would then find its flat unlike the painting.

So yes that would be a great idea for your artwork if you wanted to give away some of your talent to some friends and family as it would be very much appreciated and a canvas print from your artwork would be just the perfect gift for them that will be remember forever.

Bin Laden widow denies details of leaked statements

Courtesy: Zakaria al Sadah

In this photo, taken in Pakistan, Amal and Osama bin Laden's three youngest children (on the right) stand beside three of bin Laden's grandchildren (on the left).

By Amna Nawaz, NBC News

Amal al Sadah, the youngest widow of Osama bin Laden, has denied information included in a confidential Pakistani document, listing details of her life with her late husband. The three-page document, obtained by NBC News, is divided into nine sections -- each one paraphrasing a statement or statements made by Amal to investigators while in Pakistani custody.

The contents of the document were first reported on Thursday by correspondent Azaz Syed of Pakistan's Dawn newspaper.

According to her brother, Zakaria al Sadah -- who spoke with her after the first report was published and asked her about its contents -- Amal denies ever having given any such statements to investigators, adding that most of the information included in the document is factually incorrect. The family's lawyer in Pakistan, Atif Ali Khan, clarified that while Amal might have spoken to various investigators during her time in custody, she denies having provided the level of detail in the document. Neither he nor Zakaria al Sadah would go into detail about which specific pieces of information were incorrect.

The document offers the most detailed narrative yet of where and when bin Laden and his family managed to move through Pakistan, ultimately landing in their final hideaway, just two and a half hours north of the country's capital of Islamabad. According to the document, Amal entered Pakistan legally in July 2000, arriving on a visa issued for seeking medical treatment from the Pakistan Embassy in Sana'a, Yemen. After crossing the border into Kandahar, Afghanistan, she was married to bin Laden and stayed with him there, along with his three other wives.

After the attacks on 9/11, the family "scattered," according to the document. Amal moved with her eldest daughter to Karachi, then reunited with her husband in Peshawar, moving with him to Swat, Haripur, and finally Abbottabad. Amal and bin Laden had five children together, whose ages now range between two and 12. The youngest daughter and son -- Zainab and Hussain, respectively -- were born in Abbottabad, but her older son, Ibrahim, and second daughter, Aasia, are listed as having been born in hospitals in Pakistan.

Amal and her children have been in Pakistani custody for 11 months, since the night of the U.S. forces' raid in Abbottabad that killed her husband. Her brother, Zakaria, is currently in Pakistan working to secure their release so he can take them back home, to Yemen.

Zakaria Al Sadah says he has been able to see his sister, nieces, and nephews nearly a dozen times over the last year during brief, supervised visits. In an interview with NBC News, al Sadah said he takes toys and books for the children each time he visits and avoids talking about the night of the raid, but ultimately just wants for them to be able to start a new life back home.

His mission has been complicated by the ongoing work of a special Pakistani commission, which needed to interview Amal and other family members as part of their investigation into Osama bin Laden's presence in Pakistan, and by the government's recent decision to charge the women for illegally entering and remaining in the country.

Listed in the document is a legal justification for those formal charges against Amal, which reads "she stayed in Pakistan after the expiry of her valid visa, hence, her stay in Pakistan was illegal, which is an offense under section 14 of the Foreigners Act of 1946." The government, according to this argument, has the power to deport her back to Yemen.

Zakaria al Sadah told NBC News he is now putting his faith in the Pakistani judicial system, which he trusts to do the right thing. The family is to be formally charged on Monday.

Apple needs to redefine itself, but that shouldn't take long

Image
We know that Apple can be OCD-ish about dictionaries at times, but is any brave Cupertino intern ready to step up and run the gauntlet? Apple's definition of itself in its own Dictionary application is looking dusty, while all it really needs is a quick mention of the company's latest gifts to the world -- and we don't just mean the Patent Wars.

[Thanks, Ishmaeel]

Supporters and opponents of stricter immigration laws for North Carolina spoke out Wednesday before the House Select Committee on the State?s Role on Immigration Policy.

North Carolinians For Immigration Reform and Enforcement (NCFIRE) along with Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) pressed lawmakers to ?be bold? and crackdown on undocumented citizens.

But dozens of others spoke in favor of North Carolina?s immigrant community ? praising their work ethic, their culture, and the economic benefits they provide the state.

Bishop Michael Curry of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina quoted the poet Langston Hughes and implored lawmakers to listen to the facts about the contribution of foreign-born citizens.

After two hours of testimony, Rowan County Representative Harry Warren said the House Committee will meet again in the fall, after the U.S. Supreme Court rules on legal challenges to Arizona?s anti-immigration law.

Gary Fisher Bikes Are Well Worth Your Investment

Gary Fisher mountain bikes were created a couple of decades ago. Gary is a mountain biking legend in fact he is seen as one of the people instrumental in creating the sport of mountain biking. He is a passionate rider and a fanatical advocate of cycling. Gary Fisher bikes are high quality mountain bikes which can carry you to the top of mountain biking.

Gary created his own mountain biking company several years ago, which he later sold to Trek. Trek now sells his bikes under the ?Gary Fisher Collection? label.

When it comes to mountain bikes the best equipment is always related to what you want to do with it. In my opinion there is very little point to owning a top level Gary Fisher mountain bike if you are only using it for an occasional bike ride at your local park unless of course you just have to look really good.

On the other hand if you are an avid cyclist and wanting a great mountain bike to get you down and over rough trials and need something reliable you should seriously consider a Gary Fisher bike.

Trek's Gary Fisher Superfly is is just such a bike.

It is the epitome of speed, period. There are actually five models of Superfly 100 at the present. There are two with aluminum frames and three with carbon fiber frames.

The Superfly 100 Elite is second from top as far as quality and price goes. It has great handling and good specs. It has a full carbon frame and really sets the standard as far as race bikes are concerned.

Its frame is super light yet extremely stiff and utilizes Gary Fisher's proven geometry. Its custom suspension by Fox adds superior handling control and a lot of comfort. It has X0 components and brakes not only giving it its get up and go but its stopping power as well. With this bike you will get a view from the front of the pack which is a whole lot better. The Superfly has been proven to be superior in races and on the trail.

Mountain bikes sure have come a long way in the last number of years with these higher end lighter models which are a lot more specific in their off road task. But if you want a bike that will allow you to ride those forest trails and yet be also comfortable and efficient on roads for general or fitness rides then these new 29ers are what you should be looking at.

If you?ve never heard of Gary Fisher bikes before don?t kick yourself to hard. This is one of the reasons Trek has created the Gary Fisher Collection so this great line of bikes gets the exposure they deserve.? One thing you should be assured of is they are top quality bikes. And that is why Trek had no problem making them a part of the lineup of bikes. They are well worth your time to investigate and your money to invest in. Don?t hesitate to make one of this legends bikes your next bike to ride.

A Russian banker is in a coma in a London hospital after being shot several times in a suspected assassination attempt. Scotland Yard confirmed today that it was investigating the attempted murder of German Gorbuntsov outside his executive apartment in the shadow of Canary Wharf, East London, on Tuesday evening. Gorbuntsov, who is in his forties, has been named as both a suspect and a witness in an attack on another financier in Moscow in 2009 which was carried out by Chechen gunmen. The inquiry into the attempt on Mr Gorbuntsov?s life is being led by the Metropolitan Police?s Trident Gang Crime Command, but the force is emphasising that the incident is not linked to any local gang activity. The Times understands that Trident officers have been liaising with the Yard?s Counter-terrorism Command but it has been decided to treat the case as an organised crime, rather than a terrorist, incident. The Met?s approach is significantly different from that taken in the case of the murdered Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko, who was poisoned in London in 2006. That was investigated by anti-terrorist officers as a suspected state assassination. Mr Gorbuntsov, who used to own a number of banks in Russia and Moldova, was walking to his apartment on Byng Street on the Isle of Dogs on Tuesday evening when a gunman opened fire on him. Police described reports that the gunman had used a sub-machinegun as ?speculative?.

Britain is to get an even longer summery evening this weekend as British Summer Time falls on what is predicted to be one of the warmest days of the year so far. Days into spring, swaths of the country are to bask in balmy temperatures reaching the heights of the Mediterranean, with some areas forecast to get the best weather on Sunday when clocks go forward. Temperatures in West London and across the M4 corridor towards Bristol are set to climb to around 21C - higher than in Rome, Athens and Madrid, with the mercury in Cumbria set to reach 18C. Western Scotland could see temperatures of 16C. While Saturday is predicted to be the warmest day of the weekend for London and the South East, Sunday is likely to be warm for even more of the country, the MeteoGroup said. Temperatures will hover around the 20C mark in north and west Devon, West Wales and Co

Petrol prices rose above 140 pence per litre for the first time today, putting stretched family budgets under further pressure and raising costs for industry. Analysts blamed speculators and a fall in the value of the pound for the record pump prices and warned of even further increases in the coming months. The average price for unleaded petrol rose to 140.20ppl, while diesel also rose to its highest ever level of 146.72p. Motoring organisations and garages warned that petrol prices would breach 150ppl in the weeks ahead. Tax rises will add a further 3.62p to pump prices from August 1, raising the prospect of steeply higher fuel bills this summer. Petrol prices have risen by more than 2.75ppl in the past three weeks and by 7.95p this year. A fall in the value of the pound against the dollar by 10 cents since this time last year has contributed about 4p to

SMBs have a false sense of security | IT-Online

Keeping a brick-and-mortar business safe is easy enough. Simply keep important items locked up, install an alarm system and only disclose crucial information to those that need to know it. But what happens when all?the information is electronic?
Internet security is one of those things that users never think about, until they?re the one that becomes the victim. There are always horror stories about the?person who had their identity stolen by someone who went on a shopping spree in some foreign country, but no one ever thinks that they?re the ones that this can happen to.
?Believe it or not, small businesses are prime targets for cyber-criminals,? says Bruce Goodwill, sales director ? EMEA, Australasia, South America and ROW at AVG.
?Small businesses worldwide lose billions annually to cyber-attacks, as most small businesses are hoping nothing happens. If it does, they aren?t prepared.?
So, if users think?they are too small for cyber-criminals to be interested in them, think again. Recent research by AVG reveals that IT security breaches are relatively common with as many as one-in-six SMBs (17%) reporting having had an incident in the past year.
According to the AVG SMB Market Landscape Report, SMBs are often most concerned about the more short-term, logistical issues resulting from an IT security breach, including time and cost to replace damage. However, those who have experienced a breach are more likely to have seen the longer-term impacts such as loss of sales and revenue opportunities.
?Businesses of all sizes should treat online security the same way they treat corporate governance and brand protection, and make it a boardroom issue. This is not just a technology debate,? says Goodwill.
?While they may seem like common sense, small business owners should start with the basics like promoting strong password management, with password and username combinations that are not easy to guess and which include a combination of letters and numbers; encrypting data on computers; having the latest security software installed and up to date; training employees on the dangers of cyber-attacks and identifying them; as well as protecting mobile devices, which are increasingly vulnerable to attacks.?
He adds that as the inexorable drift towards the mass use of mobile technology in the workplace becomes manifest, SMBs that do not take prompt action stand to lose a great deal.
?SMBs are showing greater appetite for solutions used by mobile workers. However, not all are aware of the IT security risks that accompany this technology. One in five are employing Android smartphones; an equal proportion use BlackBerrys while employees spend an average of one day a week (20% of their time) working away from the office.?
Yet only a quarter of SMBs surveyed by AVG viewed the use of mobile phones in business as a threat to IT security. ?Very few SMBs are currently using antivirus or Internet security for Smartphones or solutions for mobile workers,? Goodwill says.
As content is increasingly packaged for mobile consumption ? often delivered via apps from cloud servers ? methods to stay secure can become as confusing as they are numerous. While most users are familiar with the benefits of simple anti-virus software, not everyone appreciates the multitude of phishing and other scams that purveyors of malware will try to install on a device.
?While SMBs may not be dealing with issues of national security, cyber-criminals have SMBs firmly in their sights as they try to get hold of anything of value from product roadmaps to pricing data to corporate bank account information,? Goodwill points out.
?Internet security is an aspect of running a business that requires ample attention. Never assume that your business is safe online, and always keep a keen eye on anything that may potentially be harmful to your business? files or information. Securing your business will provide you peace of mind and give you more time to focus on your bottom line,? he concludes.

Kim Kardashian Flour Bomb: Kaught on Kamera!

Kim Kardashian has been flour bombed.

As previously reported, the professional celebrity was doing what she does best last night in Los Angeles - posing on a red carpet - when a young woman ran up and doused her with a bag of white powder later identified as basic cooking flour.

"I'm fine," Kardashian told E! News after the incident. "You have to laugh it off! I brushed off and came right back out."

She also didn't press charges against the culprit, who was detained by police and then released. What does it say that a tiny percentage of the THG staff wonders whether Kim concocted this flap on her own for the sake of publicity and sympathy? Just the obvious, we suppose.

Watch footage from the event now:

Encrypt your smartphone voice communications with TrustCall ...

Takeaway: Deb Shinder tested a voice encryption solution called TrustCall. Find out how TrustCall works and if it?s right for your organization.

Once upon a time, only high level government agents (Military, CIA, NSA, etc.) had ?secure? phones. The first such phones used analog scramblers to transpose the signals. The Secure Telephone Unit (STU) models that were made for the NSA, beginning in the late 1980s, were built on proprietary technologies that digitized and encrypted voice communications between two STU handsets. These special phones plugged into standard phone jacks and made unsecured calls to regular phones, as well. However, they were expensive and not widely available.

Today, privacy is an issue for almost everyone, so businesses and individuals may need a way to ensure that important or sensitive calls can?t be overheard. Thanks to Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies and the data plans that so many of us have with our smartphones, it?s now much easier and cheaper to accomplish.

There are a number of end-to-end voice encryption solutions out there, which work with Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian and/or Windows phones. Let?s take a closer look at one example.

Automatically sign up for our Smartphones newsletter!

TrustCall

I?ve recently been testing TrustCall, a voice encryption solution that?s currently available for (some) Android and BlackBerry phones. There are plans to make it available for the iPhone and possibly for Windows Phone if there?s market demand. TrustCall is easy to install and even easier to use. And unlike with some solutions, it?s very clear whether or not a particular call is being place through the secure system.

Figure 1

With TrustCall installed, you can place secure or ?normal? calls.

When you select to make a ?normal? call, it goes over the cellular network as usual. During my testing, the called phone rang within 1 to 2 seconds. When you place a secure call to the same number, it takes almost twice as long for the other phone to ring, and then there?s a brief (one second or less) period of ?authenticating? before the call connects.

Figure 2

Secure calling requires that both phones belong to the same TrustGroup.

TrustGroups

Once the call is connected, the TrustCall screen is displayed to remind you that this is a secured call. You?ll note at the bottom of this screen that it refers to the TrustGroup through which you?re connected. In order to connect to another phone through TrustCall, both must belong to the same TrustGroup. TrustGroups can be defined within or across organizational boundaries and can contain any number of phones/users. The TrustGroup(s) to which you belong are contained, along with the TrustCall software and the encryption keys, on a TrustChip.

TrustGroups can be prioritized to determine which TrustGroup will be used if two phones have multiple TrustGroups in common.

TrustChip

The TrustChip is a cryptographic device on a microSD card that is recognized by your phone like any other removable flash memory card. You can store data in the unused space on the card, but the current TrustChip only has a 128MB capacity. This is a drawback, since the TrustChip uses your microSD slot and thus limits your ability to add storage space to your phone.? Koolspan, the company that makes TrustCall, has plans to release a 2GB card later this year.

The other problem I see is that you can?t use the current TrustChips with phones that don?t have a microSD slot. So, even though Android is supported, it excludes the Galaxy Nexus and other Android phones that lack a card slot. I was told the company is working on a ?sled? attachment that would enable the TrustChip to be used with iPhones.

If you have a compatible phone, though, you can take the TrustChip out of one phone and put it in another. You?ll need to install the TrustCall software (which is stored on the card) and you?re good to go ? that is, as long as your TrustChip has an account configured on a TrustCall relay server.

Within the TrustCall app on your phone, you can set it to use a distinctive ringtone for TrustCall calls. You can also configure it to enable TrustCall for all outgoing calls, specify whether to keep the screen turned on while in a secure call, set the invitation timeout duration, and select to use the Audio Boost feature. In addition, you can set up a number to which incoming calls will be forwarded if you?re in a TrustCall call.

Figure 3

Users can configure settings to control TrustCall behaviors.

How it works

?Normal? calls are transmitted over your carrier?s GSM or CDMA network. TrustCalls use the voice network?s SMS only for the initial setup of the call. Calling plans usually include a specific number of cellular minutes (unless you have an unlimited voice plan). Encrypted calls use VoIP technology for the calls themselves and are transmitted over the data network, optimized for 3G. Thus, they don?t count against your allocated voice minutes, but they do count against your data allocation if you have a capped data plan.

However, if your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network (such as your home wireless network or a public Wi-Fi hotspot), TrustCall will use the Wi-Fi network so that the call doesn?t use your phone carrier?s data network.

The server side

TrustCall secure calls go through a Linux-based relay server, which holds the accounts for each TrustChip and the TrustGroup assignments. Koolspan operates a Universal relay server that can be used, and phones that use it belong to a Universal Trust Group so they can all place secure calls to one another. The Koolspan server is configured with failover capabilities for high accessibility.

The preferred scenario is for organizations to set up their own relay servers, and they can then create custom Enterprise TrustGroups. In this case, your calls don?t go through Koolspan?s servers. You have complete control, with the ability to create and remove TrustGroups and manage your TrustChips through the TrustCenter management software. The number of TrustGroups you can create depends on your site?s license.

The TrustCenter is accessed via a web browser. With it, administrators can remotely manage TrustChips, including destroying the TrustChip in a lost or stolen phone. The TrustCenter console uses a dual-paned interface similar to Microsoft management consoles, with a navigation pane on the left and a details pane on the right. There?s a dashboard-styled home page that displays statistics, system health information, and pending transactions. You must import the license manifest for your TrustChips and register your TrustChips to your TrustCenter site to create the encryption keys that are stored in its database. This is done with a separate application that can reside on the same server as the TrustCenter software or on a separate workstation.

The TrustCenter database contains profiles for all your users. You can import user profiles from LDAP directory services or create the user profiles manually. Users who are designated as administrators can log on to the TrustCenter management console. Administrators assign TrustChips and devices to users. More than one TrustChips can be assigned to a user, but only one user can be assigned to a TrustChip.

From the TrustCall app on your phone, you configure it to use either the Universal relay server or a relay server of your choice. The former is as easy as checking a box. For the latter, you?ll need to know the server name, port number, server password, username, and user password.

Security details

TrustCall uses FIPS validated encryption and provides a unique 256 bit AES key with no key exchange taking place over the air (thus preventing interception) and peer-to-peer authentication to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. The keys that are associated with a TrustGroup are not used to encrypt the user data. Since the cryptographic operations are performed within the TrustChip, you don?t need a public key infrastructure or certificate management system to deploy your TrustCenter. Key generation, storage, and management are taken care of by the TrustChip, and every encrypted packet is authenticated individually.

The TrustCenter registration application uses Windows authentication or SQL login credentials to access the database where the keys and information are stored.

The user experience

It?s easy for even the most non-technical users to place secure calls with TrustCall. Setting up the phone to use a particular relay server (other than the Universal relay) requires only a few items of information, and the interface is clear and easy to understand. There was obvious attention to detail in designing this application, and I didn?t encounter the ?assumption syndrome? that you sometimes see in configuration interfaces. For example, rather than just ask for ?host name,? leaving the user wondering whether to enter the phone?s name or the server?s, it spells out that the server host name is what?s needed.

The only negative aspect of using TrustCall (or any voice encryption) is the lag time that you experience during a conversation. Encryption takes time, so this is inevitable. And while there?s only a delay of a second or two, it?s enough to make it a little awkward to carry on a spirited back-and-forth discussion. I found myself waiting for the other party?s response and then starting to say something else as it came through. This is something you could get used to with practice, but it?s slightly disconcerting.

Lag aside, if you need to talk over your mobile phone about sensitive or confidential matters, knowing the call is being protected by strong encryption is important, and voice encryption technology such as TrustCall can enable you to have those conversations without the worry of exposing information.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy stands by soldiers carrying a coffin during a ceremony to pay homage to the three soldiers killed by a suspect an Interior Ministry official identified as Mohammad Merah, claiming al-Qaida links, and also suspected in the killings of three Jewish children and a rabbi, Wednesday, March 21, 2012 in Montauban, southwestern France. Soldliers were Imad Ibn-Ziaten, 30, a paratrooper in the 1st Airborne Transportation Regiment based in Toulouse, Abel Chennouf, 25, who served in the 17th paratrooper combat engineering regiment based in Montauban and Mohamed Legouade, 26, the second paratrooper killed in the same shooting. (AP Photo/Jacques Brinon)

(AP) ? France's president proposed a sweeping new law Thursday that would see repeat visitors to extremist web sites put behind bars ? one of several tough measures floated in the wake of a murderous shooting spree.

The proposed rules, unveiled by Nicolas Sarkozy after the death of an Islamist fanatic wanted for a horrifying series of execution-style murders, have alarmed journalists and legal experts, who say they risk pulling the plug on free expression.

Sarkozy, who is only a month away from an election, argued that it was time to treat those who browse extremist websites the same way as those who consume child pornography.

"Anyone who regularly consults Internet sites which promote terror or hatred or violence will be sentenced to prison," he told a campaign rally in Strasbourg, in eastern France. "Don't tell me it's not possible. What is possible for pedophiles should be possible for trainee terrorists and their supporters, too."

French law calls for up to two years in prison and ?30,000 (roughly $40,000) in fines for repeat visitors to child porn sites, although whether the proposed anti-terror rules would carry similar penalities isn't clear.

When asked, Sarkozy's office directed a query seeking details to the Ministry of Justice, which didn't immediately offer clarification.

Journalists and lawyers are concerned.

"Trying to criminalize a visit ? a simple visit ? to a website, that's something that seems disproportionate," said Lucie Morillon, who runs the new media bureau of journalists' watchdog group Reporters Without Borders.

"What's especially worrying for us is how you are going to know who's looking at what site. Does this announcement mean the installation of a global Internet surveillance system in France?"

Media lawyer Christophe Bigot seconded her concerns, saying that any such law ? if passed ? would be a serious blow to the democratic credentials of a country that considers itself the home of human rights.

"I don't see how you can assume that a person who connects (to an extremist website) not only shares the ideas that are being expressed there but is ready to act on them," Bigot said. "That seems to be a very dangerous shortcut ? a real step back in terms of individual liberty."

Bigot said it wasn't clear to him to what degree Sarkozy's proposals were serious. In any case, France's Parliament isn't in session, but could be called back for urgent legislation. Otherwise, an eventual law would be contingent on Sarkozy's reelection.

The tightening presidential race has been upended by the shooting rampage blamed on Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent who allegedly killed three French paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi before dying in a violent confrontation with police in the southern French city of Toulouse earlier Thursday.

Sarkozy has France's far-right nipping at his heels, so he's been under pressure to appear tough. A poll released Thursday by the CSA firm suggested that Sarkozy may benefit politically from a hardening of attitudes toward extremist violence.

Morillon said she understood the emotional appeal of a crackdown on online radicalization in the wake of such atrocities.

Still, she said, "you have to be careful not to attack the wrong target."

"Once more it's the Internet that's being blamed, as if the Internet was the source of all evil."

Geckos ? Interesting Facts About an Intriguing Exotic Pet : The Wise ...

March 21, 2012 ? Posted in Hobbies?

With over 1,400 species in existence around the globe, it?s no wonder that geckos are so loved as exotic pets. One of the favorites, the leopard gecko, actually looks like a leopard as far as its colors and stripes. Another favorite, the crested gecko, looks like it has armor protecting its eyes and its spine.

The Kawekaweau was the largest gecko ever reported. This lizard grew to be almost two feet long. Another other side of the spectrum is the dwarf gecko, which does not even reach an inch in length. It is the world?s smallest reptile.

One thing about these lizards is that they have no eyelids. They have a sort of protective coating, though. They have to clean their eyes with their tongues because of having no lids. One of them, the crested gecko, looks like it has eyebrows because of the crest above its eyes, which is made of skin.

These marvelous creatures are quite vocal. They will bark, chirp, click and hiss, depending on what they are trying to convey. Some of the sounds are for defense, and some are social behavior. They let the others know when they are excited. Fortunately for exotic pet owners, they cannot form these sounds into words.

You would think that geckos have suction cups on their feet because they can walk up walls and the sides of glass aquarium tanks. But there are no suction cups. Instead, they have microscopic hairs on the pads of their feet that can fit into the smallest openings, even those a human can?t see. Their toes bend the opposite direction of a human?s finger. The exception to the pads is the Leopard Gecko, which has claws instead. This makes it easier for it to climb the sides of trees.

Breeders who raise leopard geckos have an opportunity to determine the sex of a hatchling. If they incubate the eggs at 90 degrees, the offspring will be a male. If they incubate in the mid 80s, it can go either way, and if they do so at 80 degrees, it will be a female.

Just like many lizards, geckos can drop their tails as a defense mechanism. That is widely known, but what is not so known is that the Crested Gecko cannot grow its tail back. For the others, the tails the regenerate do not look the same as the one they lost. It will have duller colors and markings, and it will be shorter and stubbier. It may even be malformed. One more interesting tidbit here: They store fat in their tails to get them through lean times. It holds fat, and also nutrition, so it?s not just a source of energy.

Perhaps the most interesting of these lizards is Kuhl?s Flying Gecko that is found in Asia. It is built to glide through the air and appear as though it is flying. It is able to do this because it has flaps on both sides of the body, as well as webbed feet and broad, flat tail. It will jump out of trees and glide to the ground.

ANSI approves SHRM's cost-per-hire standard as first American HR ...

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has approved the cost-per-hire standard as the first American national HR standard sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management. The cost-per-hire standard provides a tool for organizations to reliably determine employee recruitment costs through an accepted algorithm that includes elements such as addressing organizations? specific hiring cultures and requirements.

?The approval of this standard as an American National Standard establishes a milestone for the HR profession. It affirms that HR has indeed a ?technology? that its professionals must apply, improve and preserve,? said Lee Webster, SHRM?s director of HR standards. ?The HR profession and its stakeholders can now begin to make business decisions based on credible, transferable, and inter-operable human capital analytics.?

A group of HR practitioners, academics, consultants and managers from public and private organizations across the United States developed the cost-per-hire standard. SHRM sponsored and advised the group. ?The team wanted to create a standard that would be both accepted by the CFO?s office and practical to implement by HR,? said Jeremy Shapiro, cost-per-hire workgroup chairman and executive director of Morgan Stanley. ?I think we hit the mark.?
