Waze 3.7 navigates to Facebook Events, shares directions with others

Waze 37 navigates to Facebook Events

It's not hard to navigate to a Facebook Event if there's an address: it's much harder if the organizer simply assumes that we'll know where to go. Thankfully, we can now lean on some collective help through Waze 3.7 for Android and iOS. The update not only populates the destination list with Facebook Events, but fills in the blanks for everyone involved -- enter an address and it will be sent to others on the guest list. It's also easier to be fashionably late with the new app, as Waze members can see when others are likely to show up. Anyone who's ever had to navigate to "that place near the guy with the thing" will likely want to grab the 3.7 upgrade at one of the source links.

Breakthrough on Huntington's disease

May 23, 2013 ? Researchers at Lund University have succeeded in preventing very early symptoms of Huntington's disease, depression and anxiety, by deactivating the mutated huntingtin protein in the brains of mice.

"We are the first to show that it is possible to prevent the depression symptoms of Huntington's disease by deactivating the diseased protein in nerve cell populations in the hypothalamus in the brain. This is hugely exciting and bears out our previous hypotheses," explains ?sa Peters?n, Associate Professor of Neuroscience at Lund University.

Huntington's is a debilitating disease for which there is still neither cure nor sufficient treatment. The dance-like movements that characterise the disease have long been the focus for researchers, but the emotional problems affect the patient earlier than the motor symptoms. These are now believed to stem from a different part of the brain -- the small emotional centre called the hypothalamus.

"Now that we have been able to show in animal experiments that depression and anxiety occur very early in Huntington's disease, we want to identify more specifically which nerve cells in the hypothalamus are critical in the development of these symptoms. In the long run, this gives us better opportunities to develop more accurate treatments that can attack the mutated huntingtin where it does the most damage," says ?sa Peters?n.

As the role of the hypothalamus in Huntington's disease is gradually mapped, knowledge might be gained from drug research for other psychiatric diseases. It is likely that similar mechanisms control different types of depression, according to ?sa Peters?n.

US jobless aid applications fall to 5-year low

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits fell by 4,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 323,000, a fresh five-year low. The decline signals fewer layoffs and possibly more hiring.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the four-week average, a less volatile figure, dropped 6,250 to 336,750. That the fewest since November 2007, before the recession began.

Applications are a proxy for layoffs. Weekly applications have fallen about 9 percent since November and are now at a level consistent with a healthy economy.

The job market has also improved over the past six months. Net job gains have averaged of 208,000 a month from November through April. That's up from only 138,000 a month in the previous six months.

Still, much of the job growth has come from fewer layoffs ? not increased hiring. Layoffs fell in January to the lowest level on records dating back 12 years, though they have risen moderately since then. At the same time, overall hiring remains far below pre-recession levels and unemployment remains high at 7.5 percent.

For hiring to increase enough to rapidly lower the unemployment rate, companies must gain more confidence in the economy. But some have held off adding new workers in recent months, possibly because of concerns about the impact of federal spending cuts and tax increases. And an increase in Social Security taxes could slow consumer spending, which drives nearly two-thirds of economic activity.

The Federal Reserve said last week that the federal government's policy changes are "restraining economic growth."

Still, even modest job gains could provide consumers with more money to offset the impact of the tax increase. Total wages rose 3.6 percent in April compared with a year earlier. That's comfortably ahead of the 1.5 percent inflation rate.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent from January through March, a big improvement from the anemic growth of 0.4 percent in the final three months of last year. But most economists expect growth will slow in the current quarter to 2 percent or lower.

Papi pushes streak to 27, but Twins top Sox

By HOWARD ULMAN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:35 p.m. ET May 7, 2013

BOSTON (AP) - The Minnesota Twins aren't taking any chances with Scott Diamond's surgically repaired left elbow.

On Tuesday night, he didn't give the Boston Red Sox many.

Diamond allowed three hits in seven shutout innings, Ryan Doumit hit his first homer of the season and the Twins beat the Red Sox 6-1.

Diamond said he still felt strong when he left the game but understands the cautious approach less than five months after the operation.

"This is only my (fifth) start after surgery," he said, "so I feel it was a smart play."

Diamond (3-2) is having a strong season after a rookie year in which he went 12-7 with a 3.54 ERA. He's allowed three or fewer runs in four of his five outings.

On Tuesday, he retired his last 15 batters, didn't allow a runner past second base, struck out two and walked none.

"Diamond was great for us," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said, but "coming off the elbow thing, we're really a little leery of" letting him throw too many pitches.

He threw 96 against Boston after tossing 78, 97, 97 and 88 in his other starts.

"Everything's kind of been getting back in sync," Diamond said. "That's the focus now, just continue to build and get stronger."

His approach to the game hasn't changed even if he's not pitching as long as he'd like. He still prepares intensely and throws aggressively.

"I might as well have taken a rocking chair out there. He makes it real easy," Doumit, his catcher, said. "He's one of the most prepared pitchers I've ever been around."

David Ortiz got one of the hits off Diamond, a leadoff single in the second that stretched his hitting streak to 27 games, a run that began before he sustained a season-ending injury in August. He has at least one hit in all 15 games he's played this season.

Ryan Dempster (2-3) pitched well for Boston and left trailing 2-0 in the top of the eighth after third baseman Pedro Ciriaco made errors on the first two batters, putting runners at first and third. That led to four runs, three of them unearned, as the Twins took a 6-0 lead.

The Red Sox entered the game with the best record in the majors, but have scored just 11 runs while losing four of their past five games.

They also lost two players after they collided chasing a foul pop by Chris Parmelee in the fifth near the low wall about halfway between home plate and third base.

Third baseman Will Middlebrooks caught it, but catcher David Ross slid into him, forcing his back to hit the wall. Ross left later in the fifth with a left thigh contusion and Middlebrooks was replaced by Ciriaco to start the seventh because of pain in his right side.

Ross is listed day to day, while Middlebrooks said he could have stayed in the game but will have X-rays and CT scans, Boston manager John Farrell said.

Josh Roenicke worked the last two innings, allowing Jarrod Saltalamacchia's fourth homer in the ninth.

The Twins took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a leadoff double by Doumit and an RBI single through a drawn-in infield by Wilkin Ramirez. They made it 2-0 on Doumit's homer with one out in the seventh. It was upheld on video review after umpires ruled the ball had cleared the home run line at the top of the left field wall before a fan caught it.

"I made two mistakes and (Doumit) took advantage of both of them," Dempster said. "The way Diamond was throwing the ball and keeping us in check, you knew that eventually one run would be maybe one run too many."

It all unraveled for the Red Sox in the top of the eighth with three errors, a walk and three hits.

Ciriaco bobbled leadoff hitter Brian Dozier's grounder for his first error. The next batter, Jamey Carroll, hit the ball to the left of Ciriaco, who couldn't come up with it for his second error as Dozier took third.

"That was uncharacteristic of Pedro," Farrell said. "He has shown to be a very dependable defender."

Said Ciriaco: "I just missed those two balls. I've just got to be more ready and next time make those plays."

Craig Breslow then replaced Dempster and failed to retire any of the four batters he faced. Joe Mauer doubled in one run, Josh Willingham walked to load the bases and Justin Morneau and Trevor Plouffe followed with RBI singles.

Alex Wilson relieved Breslow and Doumit grounded to first baseman Mike Napoli, who threw home for the force out - the first of the inning. Saltalamacchia tried to double-up Doumit, but his throw was low for an error and Napoli's return throw was too late to get Morneau.

NOTES: Patty Campbell, mother of Krystle Campbell, who died in the Boston Marathon bombings, threw out a ceremonial first pitch. ... With two singles, Morneau has 1,219 in his career, passing Torii Hunter's 1,218 for eighth most in Twins history. ... Pedro Hernandez (1-0) pitches for Minnesota against Allen Webster (0-0) on Wednesday night in the third game of the four-game series ... The Red Sox placed Joel Hanrahan on the disabled list with a strained right forearm one day after their other closer, Andrew Bailey, went on the DL with a strained right biceps. Farrell said Junichi Tazawa would have filled that role if needed. ... Ortiz's streak is the longest by a Red Sox player since Manny Ramirez had a 27-game streak from July 15 to Aug. 1, 2006.

'Rihanna 777? Tour Documentary: Review Revue | Music News ...

Remember Rihanna?s whirlwind 777 tour from a few months ago? No? Our own Robbie Daw certainly does, despite his attempts to erase it from his memory. And he was forced to relive the entire exodus/nightmare last night (May 6) when the?Rihanna 777 documentary aired?on Fox. The film (which, surprisingly, was not directed and edited by Rih), follows the Bajan superstar as she embarks on a seven-country, seven-show tour in just seven days.

As impossible and unnecessary as the journey may seem, there?s now a probably unnecessary behind-the-scenes look at how the whole thing went down. So, was the video chronicle the same sort of bizarre hellscape that the #RihannaPlane turned out to be? Here?s what some of the invited journalists and critics had to say about the doc.

::?The Hollywood Reporter?had 777 journalist Emily Zemler give her take: ?Instead of revealing the entertaining tumult that characterized the 777 Tour, the documentary crew has chastened the experience in the editing room, glossing over the rioting incident and the long hours spent waiting around for?Rihanna?to finish lingerie shopping in Paris.?

:: Contact Music?felt little connection to the star:??Rihanna fans are going to lap this up, but anyone looking to learn more about the star might want to steer clear, as the general consensus is that it?s a pile of contrived PR.?

:: SPIN?offers a gloomy outlook:??The beginning of?Rihanna 777, the?RihannaPlane documentary?that aired on Fox last night, is somewhat like the start of a movie like?Turistas. Shots outside the aircraft?s windows into the clouds indicate hope and excitement, and the passengers ? eagerly tearing open their gift bags ? are shouting and giggling and ribbing one another. But you know that by the end, everyone involved will be slaughtered and vivisected in a bloody pile.?

:: Huffington Post?highlights the singer?s performances: ?This isn?t Madonna?s ?Truth or Dare? (or even Katy Perry?s ?Part of Me?); it?s a Rihanna look-book, somehow made less interesting than the singer?s Instagram feed. The performances shown feature her live voice, which has never been Rihanna?s selling point.?

:: USA Today?felt disconnected:??While fans might find her interactions with band and crewmembers backstage interesting, those encounters aren?t particularly revealing. And by the time the trip winds up in New York, everyone involved is elated that it?s over. Even so, the film doesn?t come close to reflecting the tedium described by journalists in their dispatches from the trip.?

:: LA Times?tends to agree: ?This film doesn?t illuminate much about one of contemporary pop?s most successful artists, or even about the famously fraught tour itself. Instead, ?777? is a lightweight Rihanna hagiography, with none of the live-wire tension or creative demons that?D.A. Pennebaker?or Martin Scorsese brought to their own classic music docs ?Don?t Look Back? and ?The Last Waltz.??

Atom's core gets pear-shaped

Tapering asymmetry of some nuclei confirms predictions

By Andrew Grant

Web edition: May 8, 2013

Atomic nuclei come in many shapes and sizes, and scientists have now obtained precise measurements of an elusive form: pear-shaped. Studying these exotic nuclei, which are described in the May 9 Nature, could allow physicists to better understand subatomic structure and to find new particles and forces.

?It?s a beautiful, clear-cut result of a very careful experiment,? says Christopher Lister, a physicist at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.

Diagrams in middle school textbooks depict atomic nuclei as spherical, but the real story is a lot more complex. Protons and neutrons are jam-packed into a space just 10-15 meters wide, held together by a crushing force that dwarfs that of gravity. At the same time, the subatomic particles constantly move, shifting around and sometimes warping the nucleus into the shape of a football or even a flattened disk.

All those shapes are symmetrical vertically and horizontally. Physicists want to find asymmetrical nuclei because some theories predict that such deformed nuclei could exhibit strange new physical properties. Experiments over the last few decades have hinted that certain arrangements of protons and neutrons result in a pear-shaped nucleus, narrow on one side and bulging on the other.

For the new study, physicist Peter Butler of the University of Liverpool in England and an international team probed two potentially pear-shaped nuclei: radon-220, which is made up of 86 protons and 134 neutrons, and radium-224, with its 88 protons and 136 neutrons. Scientists can determine the shape of nuclei by measuring the pattern of radiation they emit.

At the On-Line Isotope Mass Separator facility at CERN outside Geneva, Butler?s team fired protons at a thick slab of uranium carbide. The high-energy protons shattered the atoms in the block, producing a cornucopia of exotic atoms, including radon-220 and radium-224. The physicists filtered out the isotopes they wanted and stripped away the atoms? electrons, leaving behind a stockpile of nuclei. Then the researchers used magnets to accelerate the nuclei to nearly 10 percent of the speed of light toward a thin layer of metal foil. The nuclei interacted with stationary atoms in the foil as they passed through, resulting in the emission of a measurable stream of gamma radiation.

The radiation measurements confirmed that both radon-220 and radium-224 nuclei have an asymmetric pear shape. The radium appears to maintain a rigid pear shape, while the radon is shiftier: Its mass continuously jiggles around so that the fat and narrow ends trade places.

?It oscillates like a ball of jelly,? says Matt Dietrich, a physicist at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.

Dietrich is impressed that Butler?s team achieved such precise measurements of the nuclei?s dimensions, which are essential for in-depth analyses of the physics at work inside. In his own work, Dietrich searches for a phenomenon called an electric dipole moment, in which the center of positive charge of a particle or atom lies at a different point than its center of negative charge.

In every atom ever measured, no such dipole moment exists ? the positively charged nucleus sits at the very center of a negatively charged cloud of electrons. Dietrich and colleagues believe that the uneven distribution of positive charge in an asymmetrical nucleus makes it a good candidate for exhibiting a dipole moment. The standard model of particle physics predicts that atoms should have virtually nonexistent electric dipole moments, so finding one could mean that an undiscovered particle or force is at work.

Holy Hell, This Is How Football Helmets Are Concussion Safety-Tested

In a new study published today in the Journal of Neurosurgery, a group of scientists proved, seemingly, that modern football helmets are better than old leather ones. Thanks, guys. What is more notable, however, is that this batshit crazy device is how the data was gathered.

The tests run here, by a group of scientists associated with Virginia Tech, found that 10 modern helmets performed significantly better at reducing the force transmitted to the skull from various types of impact. The results improved concussion risk by anywhere from 45 to 96 percent, which would be more encouraging if the old helmets weren't 80 years old.

The study was undertaken, presumably, to combat the idea that helmets are totally ancillary to preventing brain injuries in football, and are only meant to protect the skull. Even though it's finally commonly accepted that chronic brain trauma is a a pervasive issue in football, how to address it still draws heated debates.

The by-now prevailing wisdom is that while better equipment will always be nice, the nature of brain trauma?momentum, not impact, crashing the brain into the inside of the skull?makes helmets secondary. On this side, though Virginia Tech claims that's not so, and helmets can prevent not just large concussions, but the smaller impacts that cause brain trauma over the years. These aren't blind claims?they use information gathered over several years that measures head acceleration and deceleration in actual games. VT has run previous studies rating all helmets currently in use, and provides the definitive and widely cited database of ratings. So there's some precedent for VT doing useful work here.

It's also enough vested interest, though, for the Journal or Neurosurgery to run an editorial ahead of publication, pointing out that this paper, while peer reviewed, is in direct contradiction to a previously published paper. And, well, both probably can't be right, so we should all maybe go back and check our long division.

Enough of that, though. Let's get back to the important part here. What the hell is that machine? A quick Google image search returns a few other images of the Bugs Bunny punishment machines (impact drop tests), but writeups mainly focus on the sensors in the helmets (important), and not the spring-loaded-boxing-glove-like lab testing equipment (hugely important).

However! We were able to find you some giffable video from a local news/college project collaboration:

And also, just for fun, here's what some other helmet testing looks like with some different equipment, this time from BRAINS Inc.:

For now, though, know that modern helmets are almost definitely safer than the crap we used 100 years ago. We think. But also and more comfortingly, that they are being tested by the same equipment that punches Elmer Fudd in the head when he comes around looking for trouble. [Smithsonian]

Aereo seeks to block CBS from suing in additional jurisdictions

By Bernard Vaughan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Aereo Inc, the online television venture backed by Barry Diller, asked a federal court on Monday to block CBS Corp from suing it in new markets where it plans to expand.

The startup company brought the complaint in Manhattan federal court, seeking a ruling that it does not violate CBS's copyright.

Aereo said its complaint is a response to threats by CBS executives to sue the company in any jurisdiction where it makes its technology available to consumers. Aereo's service currently is available in the New York area, and the company announced plans in April to expand into Boston.

The complaint quotes CBS Chief Executive Les Moonves as saying that "we'll follow" Aereo and "we'll sue them again" in the different markets where it launches.

A spokesman for CBS was not immediately available to comment on the lawsuit.

The TV industry is concerned that Aereo, which allows subscribers to live-stream broadcasts of TV channels, could threaten its traditional business model. The service uses large numbers of TV antennas to capture broadcast signals for its subscribers.

Aereo does not pay licensing fees to broadcasters, while companies such as Comcast Corp and Time Warner Cable Inc pay billions in retransmission consent fees to broadcasters.

Last month, a U.S. appeals court in New York declined a request by broadcasters, including Walt Disney Co's ABC and Comcast's NBCUniversal, to force Aereo to discontinue its service until litigation between the companies is resolved.

Because CBS and other networks are already seeking a nationwide permanent injunction against Aereo, any further lawsuits would be duplicative, Aereo said in its complaint.

"The fact that CBS did not prevail in their efforts to enjoin Aereo in their existing federal lawsuit does not entitle them to a do-over in another jurisdiction," Virginia Lam, a spokeswoman for Aereo, said in a statement. "We are hopeful that any such efforts to commence duplicative lawsuits to try to seek a different outcome will be rejected by the courts."

The case is Aereo Inc v. CBS Broadcasting et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 13-3013.

Sony's mainstream laptops now named 'Fit,' arrive ahead of back-to-school season

Sony's mainstream laptops now named 'Fit,' arrive ahead of backtoschool season

At some point -- we're not sure when -- Sony's naming scheme for laptops got confusing. There was the C series and the E series. The S, T, Z and even the F (RIP). Fortunately, Sony's been working to clear things up: its first Windows 8 products all had descriptive names like "Duo" or "Tap." Now, it's streamlining its mainstream notebooks too. The company just unveiled some redesigned models for back-to-school season, and they're all named 'Fit.' As the replacement to the entry-level E series and most of the T line, the Fit family includes both lower-end models (the Fit 14E / Fit 15E) and premium ones (the Fit 14 / Fit 15). They'll be available this month, starting at $550 and going all the way up to $2,210, depending on how many upgrades you check off during the configuration process.

Regardless, there are certain specs you'll find across the board - not just on the Fit machines, mind you, but on every Sony PC announced this season. These include NFC, backlit keyboards and webcams with Sony's Exmor R imaging tech for better low-light performance. They'll all have 1080p screens, too, with the exception of the 14-inch Fits, which start at 1,600 x 900. Both the Fit and Fit E will be offered with optional NVIDIA GT 740M GPUs (1GB or 2GB), touchscreens, optical drives and a choice of Core i3, i5 and i7 processors (Ivy Bridge for now). Ultimately, then, the difference between the two comes down to build quality: the Fit E is made of plastic, whereas the Fit has a thinner aluminum chassis, with the fans hidden above the keyboard, and a lid that covers the hinge. Also, the Fit will be offered with SSDs, with hybrid drives being the base option; the Fit E comes standard with a regular HDD and can be upgraded to a hybrid drive. And in any event, all of these laptops will be available later this month. For now, check out the press shots below for a closer look.

Hulu Plus arrives on Windows Phone today

It was six months ago that Hulu Plus made its official debut on Windows 8 PCs and tablets. Now, Windows Phone users are about to suffer a similar loss of productivity. The WP8 app will be available today as a free download, featuring unlimited streaming and Live Tile support -- provided you're willing to fork out the standard $8 monthly subscription, that is. In any case, it should be available shortly, so keep a lookout. And as for all you Windows Phone naysayers, this means you now have one less reason to, well, say nay.
